G5 in the police with box

The G5 is a in the GDR developed and built three-axis Langhauber - trucks.

History

It was produced from 1952 (prototype) to 1964 in the VEB Kraftfahrzeugwerk " Ernst Grube " Werdau. The work was part of the IFA and grew out of the 1945 resolution Schumann works in Werdau. The development of the truck began during World War II in the Vogtland Maschinenfabrik AG ( Vomag ). Since the Soviet occupation forces had completely dissolve the Vomag shortly after the end of the war and dismantle of the development of the Auto Union or at Horch was continued.

The vehicle was also provided in the GDR for military use. The "G " stands for off-road and "5" for 5 t payload. There was also a variety of additional devices can be mounted.

The vehicle could move less well in comparison with the triaxial Soviet SIS 151 off-road.

Technology

G5 has the three axes, and is all-wheel drive (6 × 6 ), the drive to the front axle, however, can be turned off (6 × 4).

  • Engine: 6- cylinder diesel engine with 120 hp
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual transmission gear with dog clutch
  • Allowable working load: 5 tons
  • Maximum speed on road: 80 km / h
  • Top speed in the field: 40 km / h
  • Models / Bodies: dump truck, crane, suitcase (including workshop case ), platform with tarpaulin, tanker, water cannons, fire engines and several others. The bodies were carried out in many cases with other companies in the GDR.

The cab was manufactured in different versions, such as a closed cab, cab with long cabin (season cabin at fire engines ), cab with a soft top and a cab with a fold-down windshield.

The truck G5 and H6, which were built about the same time in Werdau, are sometimes used for the same modules. In order to improve above all the properties for off-road use, the container with a more powerful engine evolved G5 / 3, but this was not built in series originated.

Use

The biggest buyers of these trucks were the CIP or NVA and the people's police. Larger notoriety gained the vehicles of the fighting groups of the working class and the version as water cannons, which were used on 13 August 1961 during the construction of the Berlin Wall.

There were not present in sufficient quantities in the GDR trucks, decommissioned G5 the NVA continued to be used later in Agricultural Production Cooperatives and in the economy, for example, as fuel transporter for Minol. But even with the fire department of the G5 was used, primarily as a fire engine ( TLF 15) with crew cabin.

Goods for army use five tons payload usually sufficient and the cross-country important, this corresponded to the needs of the industry only to a small extent. The ratio of benefits and did not meet the economic conditions. This meant that the G5 was hardly ever used with the appearance of alternative trucks.

Development

There were generations G5 / 1 and G5 / 2

The newly developed from scratch successor to the G5 should be the G5 / 3. It provided for an air-cooled V8 diesel engine with 150 hp from a displacement of 12.5 liters. This in turn triaxial vehicle should receive single tires with tire pressure control system. In the years 1958/59 and 1961 four functional models and two production prototypes were built. In May of 1962 the development of the G5 / 3 has been canceled. Occasion was the decision for the series production of the W50. However, the reasons for the termination are the former economic situation in the GDR owed. In particular, the engine development and the tires were preparing this problems. In addition, the necessary in the manufacturing plant in Werdau for series production investments were given the low demand on the part of the NVA and the lack of export opportunities considered to be too high.
