Iffwil is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Iffwil is located on 560 m above sea level. Level, 13 km north of the capital of the canton of Bern ( straight line ). The scattered village extends a scenic location in a shallow trough in the eastern part of the high plateau of Rapperswil, the Swiss Plateau.

The area of ​​5.0 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the central Bernese Mittelland. Between the heights of man carrying respectively Brättenmoos ( 605 m above sea level with. M. the highest point of the municipality ) in the southwest and the Tannwald (603 m above sea level. M. ) in the north- east is a broad trough with the settlement core of Iffwil. To the north- west of the municipality spell reaches into the moss in the headwaters of the fire stream, which drains this part of north across the Mülchibach to Limpach. In the east, the municipality of soil over a gently sloping hillside in the catchment area of ​​the Urtenen extends, includes the forests of Büelen and Gumpisberg and extends to the edge of the forest of the hill fortress in Jegenstorf. From the municipality surface 1997 8 % were settlements, 37 % of forest and woody plants and 55 % to agriculture.

To Iffwil include the residential district Bergacher (580 m above sea level. M. ) on the southern edge of the Tannwaldes and some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Iffwil are Grafenried, Jegenstorf, Zuzwil (BE), Bangerten and woman fountain.

Population

With 412 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Iffwil one of the small communities of the Canton of Bern. Of the residents 98.1 % are German, 0.5 % French-speaking and 0.2 % speak Spanish ( as of 2000). The population of Iffwil amounted in 1850 to 374 residents in 1900 to 339 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population fluctuated always in the range between 300 and 370 people. Since 1980 (301 inhabitants) a significant population increase was recorded.

Policy

The voting shares of the parties at the national elections of 2011 were: SVP 33.5 %, BDP 29.7 %, SP 7.8 %, GPS 7.6 %, FDP 5.8 %, EPP 4.6 %, glp 4.3 %, EDU 3.5 %, SD 1.1 %, CVP 0.7 %.

Economy

Iffwil was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and dairy farming and forestry have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In Iffwil today, among other establishments of horticulture, a garage and a mechanical workshop are represented. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the agglomeration of Bern.

Traffic

The community is located off of the larger passage axes on the cross road of a compound of Münchenbuchsee for female wells and Jegenstorf after measuring. The nearest links to the A1 ( Bern- Zurich ) is located approximately 7 km from the town center. A bus of RBS, which operates direct flight from Jegenstorf after measuring, Iffwil is connected to the public transport network.

History

Single finds from the Neolithic period and grave mounds from the Hallstatt period in Tannwald evidence of an early settlement of the municipality. The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1148 under the name Iffenwilere. Later, the names Iffiwiler ( 1261 ), Ifwile ( 1276) appeared, Yffewile (1310 ) and Jffwil ( 1442 ). The name goes back to the Old High German personal name IFFO and accordingly is the homestead of the IFFO.

Since the Middle Ages Iffwil was the property of the Counts of Kyburg. Addition, however, also had the Cluniac Priory in Rüeggisberg and the Cistercian monastery Frienisberg land in the village. These ownership rights were transferred to the hospital in Lower Bern and at the Cistercian convent woman fountain in the 14th century. Even 1356 is mentioned in the records of Niederiffwil and Oberiffwil. The latter was on the border against Zuzwil and was probably abandoned around 1400. In 1406 Iffwil came under the suzerainty of Bern and the district court Zollikofen was assigned. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged to the district during the Helvetic Zollikofen and from 1803 to Oberamt Mrs. Fountain, received the status of an office district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.

Attractions

The village has preserved many characteristic farmhouses of the Bernese country style from the 18th and 19th centuries. Iffwil does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish Jegenstorf - Urtenen.
