Ifni is a former Spanish colony on the West African Atlantic coast at the height of the Canary Islands, south of Agadir in Morocco.

Ifni was 1500 km ² large and had in the late 1950s around 24,000 inhabitants, the majority were Berbers. The capital was Sidi Ifni (today only Ifni ).

Already in 1476 Ifni was first annexed by Spain. 48 years later, it was reconquered in 1524 by the Berbers. Only in 1860 came as a result of the Treaty of Ifni Tétouan of 26 April 1860 ( also called the Treaty of Wad -Ras ) back under Spanish control. Also known as France and Spain in 1956 Morocco dismissed in the independence, Spain retained alongside the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla also Ifni and Western Sahara.

From 1946 to 1958, Ifni part of Spanish West Africa and then Spanish overseas province. In December 1957, the Moroccans in the Ifni War failed with the attempt to occupy the colony. 7000-8000 Spanish soldiers held an area that was economically practically worthless and was entirely dependent on the supply from the Canary Islands. Until 1969 it was handed over to Morocco.
