Ifor James

Richard Ifor James ( born August 30, 1931 in Carlisle, England, † December 23, 2004 in Titisee -Neustadt ) was a British horn player.

James 's mother was a famous pianist, the father leading cornet players. Even as a four year old, he played cornet in a brass band and at the age of seven trumpet every night in the theater. For five years, James was a professional footballer.

In 1949 he began a horn studies with Aubrey Brain. Soon he was successful in the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Later, James played in London as principal horn with all the major orchestras and numerous well-known chamber music ensembles and Others soloist with the English Chamber Orchestra and horn player in the world famous Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.

Later he was a professor of horn at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Northern College in Manchester, then at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg im Breisgau. There he became one of the most successful teachers and horn soloists in the world. He died in 2004 at his home in Titisee -Neustadt, after he had already been fighting for several years against cancer.

James was a composer (81 works ), and author of books ( five publications).

Many horn players were students of James, including Norbert Stertz, Frank Lloyd, Matthias Berg.
