Ignatz Leo Nascher

Ignatz Leo Nascher (* 1863 in Vienna, † 1944) was an American physician of Austrian origin and founder of the term geriatrics.

Life

Nascher grew up in Vienna, emigrated to America, studied medicine and worked from 1885 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Father of geriatrics

As Nascher 1908 in Austria the ultra-modern for its time Versorgungsheimstraße Lainz visited, he was struck by the low death rate of residents. A doctor told Nascher the care concept as follows: We deal with the inmates as the pediatrician with his children. Nascher then coined the term geriatrics (based on the Paediatrics) for medicine in the elderly.

The City of Vienna awarded the Ignatius - Nascher Prize annually.
