Ignaz Kiechle

Ignaz Kiechle ( born February 23, 1930 in Reinhart's ( St. Mang / Kempten ), † December 2, 2003 in Kempten ( Allgäu) ) was a German politician ( CSU). He was from 1983 to 1993 Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Forestry.

Life and career

After attending elementary school Kiechle graduated from an agricultural teaching. Then he could make a six-month, agricultural internship in the U.S., which was very unusual for the postwar period. Upon his return he attended from 1949 to 1952, the Agricultural College. In 1960 he passed the master's examination and formed since apprentices. From 1958 to 1968 he headed the parental farm.

Ignaz Kiechle was with Cecilia Kiechle, born Räth, married and had four children. His son Thomas Kiechle is involved in local politics and since 2014 for the CSU the mayor of Kempten ( Allgäu). His daughter Andrea conducts the AVA Agrarverlag Allgäu in Kempten GmbH, which publishes several magazines, such as " The beautiful Allgäu " and the " Allgäu Bauer sheet". His daughter Manuela currently belongs to the party executive of the CSU.

Party

Since 1953 Kiechle was a member of the CSU. From 1971 to 1984 he was Chairman of the Association of Agriculture of the CSU. From 1972 to 1982 he was chairman of the CSU district association Oberallgaeu. From 1980 to 1997 he was a member of the CSU Board.

Member of Parliament

From 1966 to 1972 Ignaz Kiechle was a member of the local council of St. Mang and the council of Kempten.

From 1969 to 1994 he was a member of the German Bundestag. Here he held from 1976 to 1982 the chair of the Association of Food, Agriculture and Forestry of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. From October 1982 to March 1983 he was also deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group. Recently (12th legislature, 1990) was Kiechle with 58.1 % of votes directly elected representative of the constituency Oberallgaeu.

Public offices

After the general election in 1983, he was appointed on 30 March 1983 as Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Forestry in led by Chancellor Helmut Kohl Federal Government. Health problems forced him to resign from the government on 21 January 1993.

Work

Kiechle represented the principle: " There must be farmers and their families who shape the face of the countries and regions in Europe, receive and grow food in any form, not pure producers".

One of his biggest tasks as Minister of Agriculture, was the Europe-wide introduction of the milk quota in order to prevent " milk lakes " and " butter mountains " to what was realized in 1984. The resistance was first associated with enormous and personal attacks, of which Ignaz Kiechle did not let swayed. When the rate expired in the early 1990s, it was then extended indefinitely in silent unity at first until 2000.

As Minister of Agriculture Ignaz Kiechle also maintained a policy of friendship and cooperation with agriculture ministers in Eastern Europe. In 1987 he visited the GDR and met with his East German counterpart Bruno Leitz. On the 24th General Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO in Rome in November 1987 agreed Ignaz Kiechle with the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of the People's Republic of Bulgaria Alexi Ivanov, a Bulgarian -German investment program for agriculture.

Honors and Awards

Ignaz Kiechle was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Bavarian Order of Merit, in 1993 with the Ernst- Reuter- badge, the Golden Badge of Honour for Services to the agricultural social insurance, Andreas Hermes Medal of the German Farmers' Association, and the Golden Public Service Medal of the city of Kempten ( Allgäu) excellent. He was also awarded the Grand Gold Medal with Ribbon of the Republic of Austria, in France the Order "Pour le Mérite agricultural " and the order " del Merito Agrario " in Spain.
