Ignaz Moscheles

Ignaz ( Isaac / Isack ) Moscheles (* May 23, 1794 in Prague, † March 10, 1870 in Leipzig ) was a Bohemian- Austrian composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

Moscheles, the son of Jewish parents, was a pupil of Friedrich Dionys Weber at the Prague Conservatory and later studied in Vienna with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger (1736-1809) and Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) composition. He was friends with his idol, Ludwig van Beethoven. After his marriage with Charlotte Embden in 1825 in Hamburg the years followed in London, where he lived until 1846 and worked.

In 1846 he took over at the invitation of his friend Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy the piano class at the Leipzig Conservatory, founded in 1843. Moscheles was throughout his life the reputation of one of the greatest piano virtuosos in Europe to be, as a teacher, he was of exemplary conscientiousness. He represented the Clementi - school and stayed on steady hand posture - a game mode in which it is primarily on the mobility of the fingers, while the use of the pedals as far as possible avoided.

Ignaz Moscheles was the father of the painter Felix Moscheles and father of the painter Margaret Moscheles. His granddaughter was the painter Jelka Rose, wife of the English composer Frederick Delius. His great-grandson was the German diplomat Dr. jur. Georg Rosen, who in 1937 together with the German businessman John Rabe saved the lives of thousands of Chinese during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing.

After his death, a street was named after him in 1873 in Leipzig.
