Ignazio Marabitti

Ignazio Marabitti ( born January 6, 1719 Palermo, † January 10, 1797 ) was an Italian sculptor in Sicily and the last important representative of the Palermo school of sculpture.

In Rome he was a pupil of the Florentine sculptor Filippo Della Valle (1697-1768), who was a member in 1730 and 1752 three times princeps of the Academy of San Luca in Rome. Here Marabitti learned the technique of high relief, and sat thus founded by the Gagginis and sculptor Giacomo Serpotta tradition in Sicily continued.

In his workshop in Piazza S. Onofrio, he employed many staff and students to carry out the numerous orders usually aristocratic Palermo.

His earliest work are the statues of Peter and Paul on the facade of the cathedral in Syracuse from 1746. His main works are located in Palermo, where he spent most of his life. Especially its fountain Fontana del Genio and Cavallo Marino became known. He realized elegant high reliefs and grave times that embodied the spirit of the Sicilian aristocracy.
