Igors Miglinieks

Igors Miglinieks ( born May 4, 1964 in Riga, Latvian SSR) is a Latvian basketball coach and former Soviet basketball player. He played on the position of the shooting guard and was a member of the Soviet national team at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Olympic champion.

Career as a player

Even as a 16 -year-old was Miglinieks to the first team of VEF Riga. When he was of draft age, he came to CSKA Moscow. After a customs offense in 1987, he was transferred back to VEF back. Before the 1988 Olympics in Seoul the disciplinary measure was lifted and he was allowed to Seoul, where he was with the Soviet National Olympic champion. In the same year he became Soviet champion with CSKA. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he played again at the Olympic Games in 1992 in the United team and reached the fourth place in Barcelona. After 1992, he played in various European countries for different teams, as well as from 1992 to 1994 for SG Braunschweig. Parallel to his Spielertätigleit began his coaching career. So he oversaw in 1997 the Latvian national basketball team at the European Championships in 1997. He finished his playing career final after the 2000 season and was also coach at LMT Riga.

Career as a coach

As a coach Miglinieks was seldom long at a club and coached various clubs in Europe. His greatest success as a club coach he celebrated in Cyprus, where he was twice in a row Cypriot champion with Proteas EKA AEL 2006 and 2007 respectively and reached the cup final. He was named coach of the year in Cyprus in 2006. Besides working as a club coach he was two years assistant coach of the Chinese national basketball team under Rimas Kurtinaitis and won with China, the Asia Cup 2005. Likewise, he took over as assistant coach of the Latvian national team at the 2009 European Championships in Poland.
