My little children come ye, (originally The Children bey the manger ) is a church Christmas carol dating from the 18th century.
Origin
The Catholic priest and spiritual writer Christoph von Schmid occurred from devout conviction and from an educational vocation for children. Schmid therefore wrote some 50 small stories with educational concerns in a language understandable to children. He showed them in Example stories of how God can win the good.
Become particularly famous is his 1798 in Thannhausen authored, originally achtstrophiges Christmas poem The children bey the crib, which he recorded first published in 1811 and 1818 " dedicated to flowers, the flourishing age " in his collection. The poem was then ( in addition to other poems of the collection) 1837 by Franz Xaver dubbed air.

Became known, it is but with a melody of Lüneburg composer Johann Abraham Peter Schulz from the year 1790. At that time, the Danish royal court music Schulz in Copenhagen, where he used his music-theoretical interests. He wanted to achieve a cultural and moral promotion of people with folk songs. So he published already in 1782 and 1785 two volumes of his "Songs in Folk Style ". 1790 then appeared the third volume, in which he published the notes as " The moon is up " later and " Little Children, come " were known. Its original text was a spring song by Wilhelm Gottlieb Becker: "How lovely, how delightful is all about ."

To 1832, the Gütersloher elementary school teacher and organist Friedrich Hermann Eickhoff ( 1807-1886 ) highlighted the text of Schmid's poem for the first time the melody of Schulz. He published the song in his collection "Sixty German songs for thirty penny ", which became a bestseller in the C. Bertelsmann Verlag. He changed the final notes of the melody. In this version, she is still the most widely used and also in the Protestant hymnal (EC 43) and included in Catholic Gotteslob of 2013 ( GL 248):
