II liga (Poland)

The second league is the third highest league in Polish football. It was first held in 1953. From 1953 to the 2008/09 season was the third league competition, starting from the season 2009/10 League 2. In the early years the mode has been changed again and again. So the league consisted mostly of two or four squadrons, meantime, however, there were 16 or 20 seasons. From summer 1962, the season was not played in Kalendarjahr, but the league has been adapted to the system of major European football leagues. Since the 2008/ 09 season, playing 36 clubs in the league, which are divided into two groups ( East and West ) each with 18 teams. The first and second position in their group to rise directly to the first league, the last four of each group will be relegated to the third division. On June 21, 2013, the Polish Football Association PZPN announced that the league no longer exists from the season 2014/2015 of two groups with 18 teams, but is merged into a league with the best 18 teams. Thus, the nine best -placed of the two leagues for the league qualify starting in 2014/ 2015.
