IIHF Continental Cup 1999

The IIHF Continental Cup 1998 was the second edition of the discharged by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF competition. A total of 49 teams participated from 26 countries. The final round was held from 27 to 29 December 1998 Slovak Košice.

A final round participants was set, the host and last year's winner HC Košice. The three other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

First round

Group A

The games in Group A took place between the 18th and 20th September 1998 Lyon, France. Here, the Norwegian team prevailed from Asker.

Group B

The matches of Group B took place between the 18th and 20th September 1998 with a Spanish Jaca. Here, the Slovak team Dukla Trenčín of the HC prevailed with three wins and only three goals conceded.

Group C

The group C was held in Novi Sad, Serbia, where host HK Vojvodina Novi Sad was no more than third place out. The Ukrainian representative HK Berkut Kiev qualified with three wins for the second round of the cup competition.

Group D

Group D was held in Nowy Targ, where the English representative, the Sheffield Steelers, not traveled all. This took place only one per team and only two games per day. The tournament hosts won Podhale Nowy Targ with two wins and qualified for the second round.

Group E

The group E was held in Bucharest, Romania. The tournament hosts won CSA Steaua Bucharest with three wins and qualified for the second round.

Group F

The group F was held in Miercurea Ciuc Romania. The tournament won by the host team, the SC Miercurea Ciuc, with three wins and qualified for the second round.

Second Round

Group G

The group G was held in the French Amiens. The tournament won the Norwegian team from Hamar, Storhamar Ishockey, with three wins and qualified for the semifinals. In the deciding game to win the group managed a 4-3 victory against the host HC Amiens Somme.

Group H

The group H was held in Poprad, Slovakia. The tournament was won by HC Dukla Trenčín with three wins and qualified for the semifinals. In the deciding game to win the group managed a 5-1 victory against the host HK SKP Poprad.

Group J

The group J was held in the Belarusian Nawapolazk. The tournament was won by the host Polimir Nawapolazk with three wins and qualified for the semifinals. In the deciding game to win the group managed a 5-3 victory against the HK Sokol Kiev.

Group K

The group K was held in Cardiff, Wales. Venue was the 2,500 -seat Cardiff Arena. The Slovenian representative, HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, prevailed with two wins and a draw, reaching the semi-finals.

Semifinal

The matches of the semi-finals were played between 13 and 15 November 1998, three theaters.

Group N

The games in Group N were held at the ice rink at the Brehmstraße in Dusseldorf, where the host Düsseldorf EC interspersed with two wins and a draw and reached the final.

Group O

The group O was held in Ambri in the Swiss canton of Ticino. De host club, the HC Ambri -Piotta, dominated the tournament with three wins and moved so that in the final. Venue was the 7,000 -seat Pista la Valascia. The big disappointment of the tournament was the Austrian representative EHC Graz, who only suffered defeats and in the same year went bankrupt.

Group P

The matches of the group P were held in the Russian Yaroslavl. Here, the HK Avangard Omsk sat through with three wins, while the host Torpedo Yaroslavl only reached the second place. In the deciding game to win the tournament the team from Omsk managed a 4-0 win against the hosts, reaching the final of the Continental Cup.

Final

The matches of the final tournament took place between 27 and 29 December 1998 Slovak Košice. Guest Imaging team was last year's winner of the Continental Cup, the HC Košice, all games in the 8,340 -seat Košice Štadión L. Trojáka were held.

Results

1 After the group matches played three teams had four points and one defeat and a win against the other two competitors. Therefore, the goal difference between themselves decided at the games of these three teams.

Thus, the HC Ambri -Piotta was under coach Larry Huras on goal difference for the first time in its history, winner of the IIHF Continental Cup, while the Düsseldorf EC could decide not match the final round for themselves.
