IIHF Continental Cup 2001

The IIHF Continental Cup 2000 /01 was the fourth staging of the material discharged by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF competition. On September 22, 2000 to January 14, 2001 discharged 46 teams participated in this tournament. The final round was held in Zurich from 12 to 14 January 2001.

First round

The matches of the first round took place between 24 September 2000 22. In five groups of four teams a total of 20 teams played for a place in the second round. Only the first group qualified for the Games of the groups F to L, where five seats were still open.

Group A

The tournament Group A was held in Sofia, Bulgaria. Here, the HK Sokol Kiev suspended with three wins through against its competitors and reached the second qualifying round.

Group B

Group C

Group E

Second Round

The matches of the second round were from 20 to 22 October 2000, six venues instead. The 24 teams, including the five qualifiers of the first round, played in six groups of four clubs. The qualifiers were placed in the groups F, G, H, J and L. The group winners reached the semifinals of the competition.

Group F

Group G

Semifinal

Group M

The tournament of the M group was held in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The venues were Biasca with the Pista di Ghiaccio and the home stadium of the host HC Ambri -Piotta, the Pista la Valascia Quinto. The tournament winner was coached by Sean Simpson German DEL participants Munich Barons, who won with two wins and a draw. Group N

The games in Group N were held in the Slovak capital Bratislava. It brought together the host HC Slovan Bratislava, the Slovak runner HKm Zvolen, Czech HC Ocelari Třinec and the Polish representative Dwory SSA Unia Oswiecim each other. Although the HKm Zvolen on Matchday managed a win against HC Slovan Bratislava, the latter could be secured with two significant victories at the end of winning the tournament. The point same team from Třinec took second place due to goal difference and the lost direct encounter on the last day of the tournament.

Group O

The tournament of group O was held in Norway Hamar. Here, the London Knights put through on goal difference against Vålerenga IF Oslo and thus qualified for the final round.

Final

The matches of the final tournament took place in Zurich between the 12th and 14th January 2001. Guest Imaging team were the ZSC Lions, all games were played in the then 11,000 -seat indoor stadium.

Already on the opening day, the balance of the four-man starting field reflected. Only the hosts were able to leave with a 1-0 victory over the London Knights ice as the winner. Bratislava and Munich parted 2-2 draw. On the second day of the tournament, the Zurich could then already clear to win the tournament by a clear 4-1 on the Munich Barons. In addition, they played the 5-2 win over London Bratislava in the cards. Not even the final victory of the Knights over the Munich Barons did not change anything. Despite the defeat on the last day of the tournament against HC Slovan Bratislava the host ZSC Lions were due to the direct comparison against the London Knights for the first time in its history, winner of the IIHF Continental Cup. For the third time in a row won a Swiss team the trophy. In addition, it was the third consecutive title for ZSC coach Larry Huras, who had previously won twice with the HC Ambri -Piotta.

The top scorer of the tournament was Terry Marchant of the London Knights with three goals and three assists. In addition, the goalkeeping performance of the Zürcher's Ari Sulander stood out, which reached a quota of 98.31 percent.
