IIHF Continental Cup 2002

The IIHF Continental Cup 2001 /02 was the fifth edition of the discharged by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF competition. The final round was held in January 2002 in Zurich.

Only the host club, the ZSC Lions Zurich was set for the final tournament. The other three participants were identified in three qualifying rounds.

First round

The tournaments of the first qualifying round were held from 21 to 23 September 2001 six venues. The respective tournament winners qualified for the second round.

Group A

The tournament Group A was played in Turkish İzmit. Here, Kaszink - Torpedo Ust- Kamenogorsk clearly won by three wins and reached the second qualifying round.

Group B

The games in Group B were held in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Here, the HK Keramin Minsk clearly won by three wins, the Belarusian team reached a goal difference of 51:3.

Group C

The tournament of group C was in the capital of Romania, Bucharest, discharged. Here, the HK Vojvodina Novi Sad set due to the gained direct comparison against the HK Slavija Ljubljana from Slovenia through and reached the second qualifying round.

Group D

The tournament Group D was in the Hungarian Dunaújváros. Here, the HK Jesenice Slovenia clearly won by three wins and reached the second qualifying round.

Group E

The tournament of group E was held in the French Font-Romeu- Odeillo- Via, as the host Spanish club, the CG Puigcerdà, had no suitable venue available. While the hosts finished only last tournament course, the Dragons de Rouen is interspersed with three wins by clear and reached the second qualifying round.

Group F

The games in Group F were held in Tilburg Dutch. Here, Grenoble Métropole Hockey sat through 38 on goal difference in the matches between the three teams finish equal on points and reached the second round of the competition.

Second Round

The tournaments of the second qualifying round were held from 19 to 21 October 2001 six venues. The respective tournament winners qualified for the third round.

Group G

The games in Group G were held in Milan, Italy. Here, the host HC Milano Vipers put in the last tournament with a 3-1 victory over the HDD Olimpija Ljubljana through, reaching the third qualifying round.

Group H

The games in Group H were held in Hungary Székesfehérvár. Here, the HK Keramin Minsk prevailed with two wins and a draw and reached the third round.

Group J

The matches of the group J were held in the Polish Oświęcim. Here, the host Dwory sat S.S.A. Unia Oświęcim with two wins by while the team of HK Vojvodina Novi Sad was disqualified. Because of injuries they had traveled only with eleven field players and a goalkeeper for the tournament and did not meet thus the required minimum number of players.

Group K

The tournament in Group K was held in the Czech Prostějov. Here, the host HC Prostějov defeated the team of GKS Katowice in the decisive final tournament match 4-2 and reached both win the group, and the third qualifying round. The match between the HK Acroni Jesenice and GKS Katowice was canceled after the first third with the score at 0-1 after the President of the HK Jesenice had attacked the main Czech referee assaulted. In the first third Jesenice played twelve minutes with ten men, while preserving the goal. The game was evaluated with 5:0 in favor of Katowice.

Group L

The tournament of group L was carried out in Finland Mikkeli. Here sat the host club, Jukurit Mikkeli, on goal difference in the matches between the three teams finish equal on points and pulled through with it in the third qualifying round of the competition.

A total of 2,615 spectators attended the six tournament games.

Group M

The games in Group M were held in the French Anglet. In this case, the host Anglet Hormadi Élite clearly won by three wins and moved so that in the third qualifying round.

Third Round

The third qualifying round were held from 23 to 25 November 2001 at the three venues. The three tournament winners qualified for the final round.

Group N

The games in Group N were held in the Italian Asiago at the Stadio Odegar. Here, the HC Milano Vipers prevailed with two wins and a draw against the host HC Asiago.

Group O

The games in Group O were held in Zvolen and Detva. Here, the host HKm Zvolen clearly won by three wins, while the German second division side ERC Ingolstadt suffered three defeats. The following players were selected to the All- Star Team of the tournament: Tomasz Jaworski ( Unia Oswiecim ) - Roman Čech, Dušan Milo - Jaroslav Török, Josef Daňo (all HKm Zvolen ), Leszek Laszkiewicz ( Unia Oświęcim )

Group P

The tournament of group P was held in Oslo. Venue of the tournament was the Jordal AMFI. The Finnish second division Jukurit Mikkeli won the tournament with two wins and a draw, while the host Vålerenga IF Oslo took second place.

Final round

Addition to the host and defending champion ZSC Lions Zurich qualified for the final tournament of the Continental Cup in Zurich Hallenstadion following teams:

  • The HC Milano Vipers sat down in the second round in the home tournament against HDD Olimpija Ljubljana, Ust-Kamenogorsk and Klagenfurt and in the semi-final against tournament in Asiago Asiago Hockey, HC Lugano and HC Minsk by. Milano was last season, Italian runners-up.
  • The Slovakian champions HKm Zvolen sat in the home tournament against the Czech second division club HC Prostejov, against the Polish champions Dwory SSA Unia Oswiecim and against the German second division club ERC Ingolstadt by.
  • The Finnish second division Jukurit Mikkeli won the tournament in Oslo against Vålerenga IF Oslo hosts, the London Knights and the French representatives from Anglet. Earlier, the " black horse " the home tournament in Mikkeli won points with Storhamar IL and HK Riga 2000. Jukurit was last season champion of the second highest Finnish league, derMestis.

The winner of the tournament was 60,000, the second 40,000, third place 30,000 and the team in fourth place 20,000 Swiss francs.

Results

After the HC Ambri -Piotta, who had won the competition in 1998 and 1999, also won the ZSC Lions Zurich the Continental Cup for the second time in a row. Against the team from Milan, which prevailed in the semi-final against the Slovakian champions HKm Zvolen 4-2, the Zürcher their favorite role did justice. The foundation stone for the title defense put the team coached by Pekka Rautakallio already in the first third, as the game score at 1-1 Petr Jaks and Gian -Marco Crameri with two goals ensured within eleven seconds for the preliminary decision. The best forward line of Vipers with the Canadians Jim Hiller, Scott Beattie and Patrice Lefebvre only managed a goal in the first period.
