IIHF European Cup 1971

The Hockey European Cup in the 1970/71 season was the sixth edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1970; the final was played in September 1971. A total of 16 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the second time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the 1969 /70 European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was held in the knockout system in return game. The defending champions CSKA Moscow and the Czechoslovak champion Dukla Jihlava ASD were there set for the semifinals.

Tournament

First round

The games were held in October 1970.

1 The EV Landshut was subsequently disqualified for the use of two non-playing legitimate Czechoslovak players.

A bye for the first round were Brynäs IF Gavle Sweden and Switzerland HC La Chaux -de-Fonds.

2nd round

The games were held in November and December 1970.

Round 3

The games were held in December 1970 and January 1971.

Semifinal

The defending champions CSKA Moscow and the Czechoslovak champion Dukla Jihlava ASD were set for the semifinals. Brynäs IF and SG Cortina had home advantage in both games. The games in Gävle were held on 17 and 19 February 1971 the Olympic Games in Cortina d' Ampezzo on 6 and 8 August 1971.
