IIHF European Cup 1978

The Hockey European Cup in season 1977/78 was the 13th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in September, 1977; the final was eventually played out in August 1979. A total of 16 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow won after a year's break to total eighth time the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the 1976 /77 European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was held in the knockout system in return game. The CSKA Moscow was there for the final set, the defending champion TJ Poldi Kladno SONP for the fourth round.

The defending Czechoslovakia TJ Poldi Kladno SONP received a bye to the third round.

4th Round

The Democratic Republic of Germany 1949 SC Dynamo Berlin received a bye and went directly into the semi-finals.

Semifinal

A free ticket for the semifinals was the Soviet Union in 1955 CSKA Moscow.

Final

The final match was also a game of the final tournament of the European Cup 1978/79. Both teams agreed to it to let the result also apply to the outstanding game of the match of 1977/78.
