IIHF European Cup 1979

The Hockey European Cup in the 1978/79 season was the 14th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition was held from September 1978 until 29 August 1979. A total of 19 teams from 19 nations took part. The 14th European Cup winner was the Soviet team of CSKA Moscow, the Ässät Pori and the Skellefteå AIK prevailed in the finals against Poldi Kladno SONP.

Mode and participants

The national champion of the Game 1977/ 78 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The tournament was played in knockout system with two games per round. In each case, a back and a leg were held. The one team that won more games, advanced to the next round. If necessary, an additional penalty shootout was held to determine the round winner.

The SC Riessersee received a bye for the first round, while Ässät Pori and the Skellefteå AIK were directly qualified for the fourth round. The two finalists of the European Cup 1977/78, Poldi Kladno SONP and CSKA Moscow were set for the final tournament.

Tournament

First round

The matches of the first round were held in September 1978. 14 teams played the seven qualifiers for the second round.

Found in 1 instead of Debrecen.

2nd round

The first round matches were held in October 1978. The seven winners of the first round as well as the equipped with a bye for the first round participants - Germany Federal Republic SC Riessersee - played the four qualifiers for the third round.

Round 3

The matches of the third round were held in December 1978 and January 1979. The four winners of the second round, played the two qualifiers for the fourth round.

4th Round

Due to financial difficulties of the ATSE Graz opted not to participate in the fourth round of the cup competition.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 26 to August 29, 1979 in Innsbruck, Austria. The games took place in the 7,800 -seat Olympic Hall.

The match between CSKA Moscow and Poldi Kladno SONP was the same as the final game of the tournament the previous year.
