IIHF European Cup 1980

The Hockey European Cup in the 1979/80 season was the 15th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition was held in several rounds from 16 October 1979 to 24 August 1980. A total of 16 teams from 16 nations took part. The 15th European Cup winner was the Soviet team of CSKA Moscow, which prevailed in the finals against Tappara Tampere, Slovan Bratislava ChZJD and MoDo AIK Örnsköldsvik.

Mode and participants

The national champion of the Game 1978/ 79 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The tournament was played in knockout system with two games per round. In each case, a back and a leg were held. The one team that won more games, advanced to the next round. If necessary, an additional penalty shootout was held to determine the round winner.

Tournament

First round

The matches of the first round were played on 16 and 25 October 1979. Eight teams played the four qualifiers for the second round.

2nd round

The first round matches were played on 7 and 22 November 1979. The four winners of the first round and the top four seeds participants - Federal Republic Germany Kölner EC, SC Bern Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Socialist Federal Republic of HK Olimpija Ljubljana and Netherlands Feenstra Flyers Heerenveen - played the four qualifiers for the third round.

Round 3

The matches of the third round were held between November 1979 and January 1980. The four winners of the second round and the top four seeds participants - Tappara Tampere Finland, Sweden MoDo AIK Örnsköldsvik, Czechoslovakia Slovan Bratislava ChZJD and the defending champion CSKA Moscow Soviet Union - played from the four qualifiers for the final tournament.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 21 to August 24, 1980 in Innsbruck, Austria. The games took place in the 7,800 -seat Olympic Hall.
