IIHF European Cup 1981

The Hockey European Cup in the 1980/81 season was the 16th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1980; the final was played in August 1981. A total of 18 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the third time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1979/80 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was held in the knockout system in return game. The final was played Free-for -All in a four- in mode.

Tournament

First round

The matches of the first round were held on 9 and 23 October 1980. Twelve teams played the six qualifiers for the second round.

1 Both games were held in Heerenveen.

2nd round

The first round matches were played on 5 and 19 November 1980. The six winners of the first round and the two set of participants - Federal Republic of Germany Mannheimer ERC and EHC Arosa Switzerland - played the four qualifiers for the third round.

Round 3

The matches of the third round were played on December 1980 and January 3, 1981 4. The four winners of the second round and the top four seeds participants - HIFK Helsinki Finland, Sweden Brynäs IF Gavle, Czechoslovakia TJ Poldi Kladno SONP and the defending champion CSKA Moscow Soviet Union - played from the four qualifiers for the final tournament.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held in Val Gardena from 4 to 9 August 1981 at the Italian Ortisei. The games were held in 4,000 -seat ice rink Ortisei.
