IIHF European Cup 1985

The Hockey European Cup in the 1984/85 season was the 20th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1984; the final was played in September 1985. A total of 20 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the seventh time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1983/84 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was held in the knockout system in return game. The final was played every - for-all in a group of five in the mode.

Tournament

First round

The matches of the first round were held in October 1984. Ten teams played the five qualifiers for the second round.

2nd round

The first round matches were held in November 1984. The five winners of the first round as well as the five seeded participants - Austria VEU Feldkirch, Finland Tappara Tampere, IL Sparta Sarpsborg Norway, Poland Polonia Bytom and Italy HC Bolzano - played the five qualifiers for the third round.

Round 3

The matches of the third round were held between December 1984 and February 1985. The five winners of the second round as well as the five seeded participants - Germany Democratic Republic in 1949 SC Dynamo Berlin, Germany Federal Republic Kölner EC, Sweden AIK Stockholm, Czechoslovakia ASD Dukla Jihlava and the defending champion Soviet Union CSKA Moscow - played from the five qualifiers for the final tournament.

1 Both games were held in Nijmegen.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 1 to 7 September 1985 at the French Megève. The games were held in 2,700 -seat Palais des Sports.
