IIHF European Cup 1987

The Hockey European Cup in the 1986/87 season was the 22nd edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1986; the final was played in September 1987. A total of 17 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the ninth time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1985/86 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was held in the knockout system in return game. The final was played Free-for -All in a four- in mode.

Tournament

Qualification

The qualifying matches were held on 2 and 9 October 1986. Two teams played a qualifier from the first round.

First round

The matches of the first round were played on 16 and 23 October 1986. Eight teams played the four qualifiers for the second round.

1 The first leg was won by the Mont- Blanc HC actually 9-1. After the appeal of HC Merano, that Mont Blanc should have used two non- players eligible Canadian players, evaluated the IIHF the game 5-0 for Merano.

2nd round

The first round matches were played on 13 and 20 November 1986. The four winners of the first round and the top four seeds participants - Finland Tappara Tampere, Lugano Switzerland, Poland Polonia Bytom and Austria Klagenfurt AC EC - played the four qualifiers for the third round.

Round 3

The first round matches were held in February 1987. The four winners of the second round and the top four seeds participants - Federal Republic Germany Kölner EC, Sweden Färjestad BK Karlstad, Czechoslovakia TJ VSZ Kosice and the defending champion CSKA Moscow Soviet Union - played from the four qualifiers for the final tournament.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 24 to September 27, 1987 in the Swiss Porza. The games took place in the 8,700 -seat Pista la Resega.
