IIHF European Cup 1988

The Hockey European Cup in the 1987/88 season was the 23rd edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1987; the final was played in October 1988. A total of 17 teams took part. The CSKA Moscow defended for the tenth time in a row the title.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1986/87 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was first played with a preliminary round in four groups of four in simple mode. The final was played in a group of four group winners of the preliminary round mode Free-for -All.

Tournament

Qualification

The qualifying matches were held on 8 and 15 October 1987 in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, as well as in the Scottish capital Edinburgh. Slawia Sofia and the Murrayfield Racers played in the return game a qualifier out of the free space in the preliminary round Group D.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the European Cup was played out in four groups of 20 to 22 November 1987. The venues were Megeve in France, Varese in Italy, Oslo in Norway and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The winner of the qualification, the Murrayfield Racers from the United Kingdom, qualified to participate in the group D.

Group A

The matches of group A were held in the French Megève. The games were held in 2,700 -seat Palais des Sports. As a side venue ten kilometers to Saint- Gervais- les- Bains acted. There was in Patinoire Municipale, which offers 1,700 spectators, played.

Group B

The matches of Group B were held in Varese, Italy. The games were held in 3,500 -seat Pala Albani. As a side venue the 40 km distant Porza acted in Switzerland. There was in the Pista la Resega, which offers 8,700 spectators, played.

Group C

The Group C matches were held in the Norwegian capital Oslo. The games were held in 5,500 -seat Jordal AMFI.

Group D

The Group D games were held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The games were held in the IJsbaan Valkenburg.

Final tournament

The final tournament was held from 14 to 16 October 1988 at the Swiss health resort of Davos. The games were held in 7,000 -seat ice rink.
