IIHF European Cup 1991

The Hockey European Cup in the 1990 season was the 26th edition of the competition of the same name by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The competition began in October 1990; the final was played in December 1990. A total of 20 teams took part. Djurgårdens IF Stockholm won his first title and ended the long-standing Soviet dominance in European competition.

Mode and participants

The country masters of the Year 1989/90 of the European members of the IIHF were qualified for the competition. The competition was played with a preliminary round in two triple and quadruple groups in simple mode. Subsequently, eight teams played in two groups of four of the participants in the Final Tournament. The Swedish and Soviet champions Djurgårdens IF Stockholm and Dynamo Moscow were directly qualified for the semifinals.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round of the European Cup was played out in four groups of 19 to 21 October 1990. The venues were in Sofia, Bulgaria, Bolzano in Italy, Rødovre in Denmark and Rouen in France. The group winners reached the semi-finals.

Semifinal

The semi-finals of the European Cup were played in two groups of 16 to 18 November 1990. The venues were the Resega in the Swiss Porza and the ice rink at the Brehmstraße in the German Dusseldorf. The group winners and runners reached the final tournament.

The final tournament was held from 27 to 30 December 1990 ice rink at the Brehmstraße in the German Dusseldorf.

Quarterfinals

Without the injured Dieter nurture and Peter- John Lee DEG difference already in the quarter- finals. Therefore, relatively few spectators came to the remaining games of the tournament weekend.

Semifinal

3rd Place Match

Final

The Swedish champions Djurgårdens IF Stockholm sat down in the final with a 3-2 victory over the national champion of the Soviet Union Dynamo Moscow and won by the first team from Sweden to the European Cup. The many years of Soviet dominance found by Dynamos final defeat an end, having recovered from 1977/78 to 1989/ 90 through walking the city rivals CSKA Moscow competition.
