The village Iisaku (Estonian Iisaku alevik ) is located in Ida -Viru county (East Wierland ) in northeastern Estonia. It is the capital of the homonymous country church ( Iisaku vald ).

Description and History

Iisaku ( German Isaak ) has 823 inhabitants (as of October 16, 2010 ). It is 30 km from Jõhvi, the capital of the county, away. The place name probably comes from the biblical patriarch Isaac.

The village was first mentioned in records in 1426 under the name Isacke. It was ( kihelkond Iisaku ) from 1654, the center of the parish of the same name. The town and its surroundings were culturally and linguistically greatly from the Votes and from 17-18. Century marked by Russian refugees.

In Iisaku is the 94 m high mountain Tärivere, opens a wide view of the town and the countryside from the lookout tower.

Attractions

The present church of the town dates from 1846. The church has a seating capacity for 500 persons. It was remodeled after a fire in 1893/1894.

The fire was also the 222 years old church bell to the victim. In the church is the only organ in the Durlacher company " H. Voit & Sons " in Estonia. The instrument was built in 1895.

In addition to the spacious park is the cemetery of the village. On it, a memorial commemorates the victims of the Reign of Terror in the 20th century.

Numerous crosses remind partly since the 17th century to the local Family Peep, whose members have brought it to prominence in Estonia. Best known is the actress and singer Helend Peep (1910-2007), who was born in the neighboring Vaikla. The most famous son of the town was the composer and local schoolmaster Robert Theodor Hansen ( 1849-1912 ). He is buried in Iisaku.

In August 1983 opened in Iisaku in its present form is a museum that deals in a permanent exhibition of local history, previous cultivation methods in agriculture, the history of the local school (historic teachers' room ) and the tradition of the local volunteer fire department. The museum is housed in the former school building, which was built in 1914. In opposite the old town hall in 1912 temporary exhibitions.
