IJsselstein

( Listen? / I ) IJsselstein is a municipality in the Dutch province of Utrecht. The name is derived from the Dutch IJsselstein IJssel.

History

IJsselstein arose as a branch in the area of the castle IJsselstein, is mentioned in 1279 for the first time. The castle came into the possession of Gijsbrecht van Amstel (also called Gijsbrecht van IJsselstein ) IJsselstein, the first lords of the barony.

Presumably, the village receives 1331-1360 the city rights. In 1390 the town walls to be built. Maybe this was already the second city wall system. Since 1398 a canon was established at the St. Nicholas church. 1417 the castle IJsselstein is looped. 1418 and 1466 the city was devastated. After 1466 an area of ​​a new city wall is limited, which is only about half as large as before. Around 1467 the castle Ijsselstein is rebuilt under the direction of Frederik van Egmond. 1551 IJsselstein comes into the possession of William of Orange ( Willem van Oranje ). By 1815, IJsselstein is incorporated into the province of Utrecht. In 1852, the city wall is largely canceled by little.

In 1961 was completed with the Gerbrandytoren with the then total height of 382.5 meters, the tallest building in the Netherlands today.
