Ijuí is a city in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The city, which was founded in 1890, has about 79,000 inhabitants ( 2008).

History

The colony Ijuhy was founded on 19 October 1890. The name means as much as pure water in the language of the Guarani. Was led the settlement of Augusto Pestana, in 1912 also the first mayor of the city was. The Czech immigrant Robert Loew founded 1911, the German -language newspaper The Serra- mail. With Brazil's entry into the war in 1917 it became the Correio Serrano.
