Ilija Petković

Ilija Petković, Cyrillic Илија Петковић, ( born September 22, 1945 in Knin ) is a former Yugoslav football player and Serbian coach.

Career as a player

For his club club OFK Beograd Petković played 500 top-flight appearances in 15 years. He was 43- times Yugoslavian national team ( 1968-1974 ) and participated in the World Cup 1974 in Germany for his country part.

Career as a coach

His coaching career began Petković at his home club OFK Belgrade. His first coaching success he celebrated with Servette Geneva, in 1994 when he won the Swiss championship. Then his other coach stations him taken her to Greece and China. In the 1998 World Cup, he was assistant to the then Yugoslav national team coach Slobodan Santrač.

As a successor to the unsuccessful National coach Dejan Savićević he took over in July 2003, the Serb- Montenegrin national football team, the missed after a series of defeats, including against Azerbaijan, participation in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Petković built the team completely around, gave young players a chance and formed to Mateja Kezman (Atlético Madrid), Zvonimir Vukić ( Portsmouth ) and Dejan Stankovic (Inter Milan), a promising team. From Petkovićs took office, the team remained in official matches up to the 2006 World Cup unbeaten, qualified for this with only one executed taken goal, but retired there with three defeats in three games out.

Since 2013 he is coach of South Korea's Gyeongnam FC.
