Ilkka Remes

Ilkka Remes ( born December 13, 1962 in Luumäki in South Karelia ), real name Petri Pykälä, is a Finnish author. He writes so far mainly crime novels or thrillers and has published a book every year since 1997. Since 2003, three novels for young people are also published by him. In his native Finland, he is one of the most popular contemporary authors. Seven of his novels have been published in a German translation.

Life

Ilkka Remes studied in Turku Business Communication and Visual Communication in London and founded at the beginning of his studies, a public relations firm and communication. His master's thesis he wrote in the field of social psychology. An initially planned graduation he was in favor of his activity as a writer. He currently lives largely withdrawn in Brussels. Public appearances in Finland such as promotional tours and author readings he avoids. After the publication of his first book he has given only two interviews.

The reason for the publication of his books under a pseudonym, he indicates that he also books planned in the future in other genres and would like to avoid by the pen name that then a reputation as a thriller writer could potentially adversely affect the success of these books.

Reception

Ilkka Remes previous literary work includes youth books, especially detective stories or thrillers and since 2003. His first novel " Pääkallokehrääjä ", in German " The skull Falter", became a bestseller. His other books sat down after their appearance regularly at the top of the sales charts in Finland and reached on the relatively small Finnish book market in general six-digit runs. He has already received several literary awards for his works in Finland, including the Kalevi - Jäntti Prize, the Finnish Crime Prize and the Literature Prize of the Olvi Foundation.

Seven of his books have been published in a German version; May 2008 be excellent with the Finnish Crime Thriller Awards 1999 " Karelian lunnaat " appeared under the German title " The legacy of evil." Translated they were by Stefan Moster, who is considered one of the leading German translator of modern Finnish literature and in 2001 was awarded the Finnish National Translation Prize. Main character of the novels " Eternal Night " and " The Hiroshima - gate" is the Finnish policeman Timo Nortamo who works as an investigator of the fictitious European anti-terrorism authority TERA in Brussels. In both books Remes linked one on aspects of modern technology - biotechnology and genetic engineering or nuclear physics - constructive and based on the classic thriller elements act with real or mythological references historical. It is characteristic of the structure of the books that several different contents and initially failed to appear as interconnected storylines are brought together only gradually to a complex whole story. Also in " Descent into Hell " and "Blood Bell", the third and fourth German-speaking book by Remes, as well as in " The Hostages " playing with Timo Nortamo, but not as a main character.
