Illanun people

The Illanun are a Southeast Asian ethnic group from the Philippines and Malaysia. They live mainly on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao and in the Malaysian state of Sabah, which is on the island of Borneo. Originally they probably originate from the area around the Lake Lanao in Mindanao. Its present number is 1000000-1500000 people.

In the past, operated the Illanun piracy and were therefore in the entire Southeast Asian region feared. The Malay word for pirate, Lanun, probably derives from the word Illanun.

Most Illanun are Sunni Muslims. They speak the language Illanun named after them, which belongs to the Malayo -Polynesian language branch of the Austronesian language family.
