Illapel

Illapel is a city in miniature north of the South American Andean country Chile, is located in the Región de Coquimbo and has about 29,000 inhabitants (as of 2005).

Geography

Illapel located around 250 km south of the city of Ovalle is the capital of the province Choapa. The city is situated on the rivers Río Illapel and Río Choapa.

The climate is dry, only in the winter there are frequent rains.

History

Illapel was founded in 1752 and 1788 the town was moved to its present location.

Attractions

15 km north of the city lies the Las Chinchillas (National Park). The park is characterized by its wild chinchilla stocks. It was founded in 1984 and is around 42 km ².

The city houses a small archaeological museum. In Illapel many historic buildings are in colonial style, a number of them dates from the time around in 1780.

Economy

Illapel lives primarily from livestock and small mining mines. Agriculture is practiced on approximately 3,500 acres and the Río Choapa, water supply poses a problem for the extension of the cultivated area dar. Attached are mainly citrus fruits.
