Fruits of genuine star anise ( Illicium verum) as a spice
Star anise ( Illicium ) is a genus in the family of Sternanisgewächse ( Schisandraceae ). It includes 42 species of shrubs and trees that remind with their flowers on magnolias.
Features
The leaves are occasionally arranged quirlförmig on branch end. The flowers are white, yellow, pink or red to brownish red. The Tepale of the outer petal circle are often reduced contribution leaf like that of the inner petal circle often significantly greater.
From the flowers of star anise species is dark brown, leathery - woody fruits develop.
Dissemination
Star anise species are native to the temperate to subtropical regions of East Asia and the Americas.
All types contain an essential oil, which is similar to that of anise and as a spice has great significance; it consists mostly of anethole.

Etymology
The name Illicium comes from Latin and means " lure " (from illicere = entice), which refers to the strong aniseed.
