Geography

Geographical Location

The municipality is located in the Upper Palatinate Jura about 15 kilometers west of Amberg and about 50 kilometers east of the town Nuremberg.

History

The place was first mentioned in 1086 under the name Ilswank documented. First, he was in possession of the monastery Kastl. By Mark Graf Diepoldsberg III. of Vohburg he was in 1118 the monastery Reichenbach paid to the erected a provost here. The monastery affiliation lasted until the dissolution of the monastery in the secularisation of 1803.

Incorporations

During the municipal reorganization in Bavaria the vilage Bachetsfeld, Bodenhof and Schwandstrasse was released on 1 July 1972, the municipality Dieter Berg and on 1 July 1976 incorporated the disbanded community Bachetsfeld. On 1 January 1978 was followed by the municipalities Augsberg, parts of the community and the community Angfeld part Götzdorf the disbanded community Götzdorf.

Culture and sights

Illschwang is an award award winning village and received the 1990 National Prize " Europa Nostra " for an exemplary and sustainable village renewal. An international jury awarded Illschwang 1992 European Village Renewal Award. The site is determined by the unique in Bavaria simultaneous parish church of St. Vitus and St. Vitus, which was built by Reichenbach monks in the 12th century. It stands on a hill, visible from afar and is surrounded by a castle-like brick walls.

Other attractions include the simultaneous church of St. Magdalena in Götzdorf and the Baroque simultaneous church of St. Margaret in the district Frankenhof.
