Illus

Illus (Greek Ἰλλός; † 488 ) was an East Roman general Isaurian origin, who played an important role in the reign of Emperor Zeno and Basiliscus.

Illus supported along with his brother Trocundes in January 475 the revolt of Basiliscus against Zeno, but then switched sides to allow Zenon the return from exile ( August 476). He remained loyal Zenon opposite first ( Consulate 478; crackdown of the usurper Marcian, 479 ), but was at times in contrast to the Dowager Empress Verina. Following a dispute over Zeno's younger brother Flavius Longinus was 483 Illus declared enemy of the state, which he answered with open rebellion and the proclamation of Leontius to rival emperor ( 484 ). The uprising was put down 488 after four years of civil war, with Illus was killed.

The area of ruins of Akkale in Cilicia at Elaiussa Sebaste is considered by a local inscription as a palace and domain of Illus.
