Vocational Illustrator

Rough estimates suggest that around 80 percent of Illustrators freelance work world is no longer in the "classical" Illustration areas such as literature illustration, but in the areas of advertising, packaging and illustrations for periodicals.

A major problem of periodicity is the increasing use of so-called " Stock Illustration ". Classically trained illustrators who find no livelihood in the literature illustration ready for a small fee of illustrations, which are distributed via so-called " stock houses ". In the United States since the early 1990s broke the illustration market for editorial illustration together largely. The " stock houses " gave her illustrations, available for a very small fee to the client and so undercut the editorial illustrators and their agents. This dumping wave reached ten years later Europe, so that the illustration outside of the commercial use is hardly lucrative here.

Another branch of the illustration work includes the book and novel illustrators. As a freelance artist, or as solid members of a publishing house, they illustrate the covers of books and single external illustrations for novels and poems.

In Germany the interests of illustrators, among others, of the illustrators eV ( IO ) can be represented as an association. The IO is a registered association, in turn, a member of the European Illustrators Forum (EIF ). On the website of Illustrators organization can also search for illustrators for projects.
