The island Garinish ( Irish: Garinis, dt " close island " ) - also known as Ilnacullin ( ir: Oileán to Chulinn, dt 'island of holly ' ) known - is located in the Bay of Bantry before the city Glengariff, County Cork in the southwest of Ireland.

Location and description

The island has a size of about 15 hectares and is characterized by its gardens and the species richness of trees and shrubs. The result are the gardens about 70 years ago in cooperation of the then owner Annan Bryce with the architect and landscaper Harald Peto. The island was in 1953 in the possession of the State over. On official maps called the island Garinish Iceland, as it is known internationally. The other name - Ilnacullin ("Island of holly " ) - is probably older.

You can reach the island by a private ferry from Glengariff. A visit is during the summer months, otherwise by arrangement. For the crossing and for the entry you have to pay separate fees. The trip takes you past Robben benches.

Climate

Garinish is protected in the Bay of Bantry and the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. The climate is almost subtropical. The winters are mild, frost, there is only short and weak, the rainfall is quite high.

Emergence of the gardens

When the family Bryce bought the island in 1910, Garinish was just a barren rock, the soil was thin and very peaty. Therefore humus was brought in from the mainland to the island was a windbreak planted coniferous trees. Only then was it possible to implement the plans of Harald Peto.
