Ilona Gusenbauer

Ilona Gusenbauer ( born September 16, 1947 in Gummersbach, born Ilona Maidan ) is a former Austrian track and field athlete.

Career

Ilona Gusenbauer is ten times Austrian Champion in the high jump and was from the late 1960s, one of the best high jumpers in the world.

Gusenbauer was first time in 1966 Austrian national champion in the high jump. First international experience she gained in 1968 at the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, when she reached the eighth place with a height of 1.76 m. Two years later she won the bronze medal at the Universiade in Turin.

The following season they reached the peak of their sporting achievements: In August 1971 she was in Helsinki European champion. Three weeks later, they jumped at a sports festival in the Prater Stadium, the height of 1.92 m and thus improved the ten -year-old world record of Iolanda Balas Romanian by one centimeter. In the same year she was elected to Austria Athlete of the Year.

At the 1972 Olympics traveled Gusenbauer as the favorite to Munich. In the final race but she had to surprise the 16 -year-old Ulrike Meyfarth beaten and finally finished with skipped 1.88 m for third place.

She lives today in District Mödling in Lower Austria.
