Ilona Hubay

Ilona Hubay ( born July 1, 1902 in Pécs, † June 20, 1982 in Munich) was a Hungarian, since 1960 lives in Germany, librarian and incunabula expert.

Life

After graduating from high school in Pécs, she studied art history at the University of Budapest and was here in 1938 as PhD. doctorate. She worked as a librarian in the National Széchenyi Library, where she was responsible for cataloging the collection Apponyis. In 1945, she became Chief Librarian. 1951 they deported the communist authorities, together with her mother on a farm near Szeged. In 1960, she fled Hungary in the Federal Republic of Germany. Here she worked as a librarian at the State Library of Coburg. From 1962 to 1976 she headed the department of incunabula and early printed editions of the Bavarian State Library in Munich.

Ilona Hubay was primarily known for its directory of all existing copies of the 42zeiligen Gutenberg Bible: The known copies of the Bible zweiundvierzigzeiligen and their owners, she presented for the first time in 1979 in the commentary to the facsimile edition of the Berlin specimen. She identified 47 pieces and their owners. Since the publication of Hubay directory two more copies in Russia were identified. Today, the directory will be continued by the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue and updated.
