Ilūkste

Ilūkste ( German Illuxt ) is a city in southeastern Latvia, on the border with Lithuania and the center of the county of the same name.

History

The town was formed in the 16th century at an intersection of trade routes. In 1596 there was a grammar school here. 1795 City center circle was ( lett: Ilūkstes apriņķis ). 1910 was here an institute for Russian teachers, which was later moved to Yaroslavl. 1917 Illūkste received municipal rights.

Ilūkstes novads

2003 joined the city Ilūkste and the municipalities Pilskalne, SEDERE and Bebrene together. In 2009, still Subate, Dviete and Eglaine added. On 648 acres of 9062 inhabitants are reported (as of 2010 ).
