Ilyushin Il-54

The Ilyushin Il -54 (Russian Ильюшин Ил -54, NATO reporting name: " Blowlamp " ) was a twin-engine Soviet military aircraft. It was developed based on the Il -30 and should complement as a tactical bomber, Il -28.

History

The first drafts of the swept-wing bomber were drafted in March 1953 and saw before, to position the two engines similar to the Tu- 16, right and left of the hull and fitted with a wing with low profile thickness in mid-wing configuration. Difficulties in the design and adaptation of the wing spars, however, led to the fact that this idea was discarded. It was decided finally for a shoulder wing design with engines hanging under the wings. A total of two prototypes were built. Vladimir Kokkinaki adopted on 3 April 1955, flight testing of the first copy, the second machine followed in the same year. The tests were successful, nevertheless was thus dispensed with mass production and incorporation into the Soviet Air Force in favor of the Yak- 27 and Yak- 28.
