Imation is an American manufacturer and supplier of storage media based in Oakdale, Minnesota. The European office is located in Hoofddorp, near Amsterdam (Netherlands). The German office of the company is located in Neuss.
The early 1950s, 3M Data Storage was founded to produce magnetic tapes for IBM tape drives. 1996 separated the Department of Imaging & Information 3M, to become imation. The film division was sold to Kodak. imation holds more than 250 U.S. patents on data storage.
Over the years has expanded its brand portfolio not only by the exclusive distribution rights for storage media of the IBM, Sun, StorageTek, Exabyte, and HP (optical media), but also by the acquisition of the brand Memorex, TDK Recording Media and ultimately XtremeMac imation.
In January 2006, took over the competitors Memorex imation of Hanny Holdings ( Hong Kong ) for about 330 million U.S. dollars. In May 2007, took over imation competitors TDK Recording Media and is the world's largest supplier of optical storage media. Just as a pioneer in the field of magnetic storage media is imation known for the wide Service-/Lösungsportfolio around tape products, such as LTO- Scanning, Labeling & Initialization or since latest DataGuardrf, one on Rfid -based solution for tracking tape media.
Since April 2009, Imation has a leading media supplies specialist that extends Supplies portfolio with " remanufactured " laser toner cartridges.
Imation is a leader in the field of magnetic storage media ( data cartridges, data tapes ) worldwide.
2006 sales amounted to 1.585 billion U.S. dollars and the profit at 75.2 million U.S. dollars.
