Iminodiacetic acid or short- IDA is a complexing agent. In aqueous solution, IDA forms stable complexes with metal ions.
Representation and extraction
IDA is produced in the catalytic dehydrogenation of N, N- diethanolamine in a yield of 95 % of theory Another process path via iminodiacetonitrile, is accessible by reaction of ammonia, formaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide in yields above 80% (U.S. Patent 4,895,971 of WR Grace & Co.)
Properties
IDA is a tridentate ligand and forms with transition metal ions such as Cu2 , Co2 , Ni2 and Zn2 stable complexes. IDA is a reactant in the synthesis of N - phosphonomethyl -iminodiacetic acid ( PMIDA ), resulting from the oxidative cleavage of a -CH 2- COOH moiety of N -phosphonomethylglycine (PMG, glyphosate). Glyphosate is the single most important non-selective systemic herbicide with a specified total capacity of 900,000 tons
