Immunophilins

In immunophilins are proteins found inside animal as well as plant cells. Are known to date 7 human immunophilins. They are found in many organs, particularly high concentrations occur in the brain.

Tasks in the organism

  • Special importance came immunophilins in connection with the mechanism of action of immunosuppressants cyclosporine and tacrolimus for which they act as it were as intracellular receptors. The complex of immunosuppressant immunophilin and triggers a cascade that inhibits the proliferation of T- cells and therefore the immune response to exogenous antigens. This functionality can also be the name deriving immunophilin.
  • Apparently independently of above mechanism are immunophilins, enzymes. As such to catalyze the conversion of the cis and trans isomers of the peptidyl- prolyl bonds in peptide and protein substrates.
