Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways

The k.k. State Railways ( short kkStB, also kk Austrian State Railways ) were the state railways of Austria ( " Cisleithanian " ) half of the Empire of Austria - Hungary.

History

The k.k. State railways originated in 1884 as a result of the government's bailout of economically ailing railway companies in the Austrian half of the empire. This was a direct consequence of the economic crisis of 1873, which had a rethinking of national railway policy result. The Rakonitz - Protivíner path was followed by the first railroad that was built by the state itself. Fully completed in 1876, the local operating private railway companies first had to leave.

For the state railways was established on 1 January 1884, the Directorate General of kk Railways set up the k.k. the Trade Minister was under. After decades of perception of the railway agendas at this resort was in Cisleithania 1896 in place of the Directorate-General for the kk Ministry of Railways established, which existed until 1918. The Ministry launched the national railways directly, without an intermediary General or the like; the railway ministers were mostly selected from the top officials of the house.

Since prevailed the state railway system throughout most of Europe, numerous private Austrian railway companies were systematically plan and fully nationalized since the 1880s, including such major companies as 1906, the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway (see transport policy ).

The route network of kkStB was substantially increased through new programs of the state. The best known example of this were the 20th century realized major projects of the north-south Alpine crossing primarily to enhanced accessibility of the seaport of Trieste, which were grouped under the policy term New Alpine cars in the first decade. These were Tauernbahn, Karawankenbahn railway, Bohinj railway (including karst railway ), Pyhrnbahn and change path. A similar project was built in the years 1887-1889 Bohemian-Moravian Transversal, with a new east- west route across the crown lands of Bohemia and Moravia should be created.

1891 included the k.k. State railway network 7132 km ( from a total of 28,066 km railway in Austria - Hungary), 1378 locomotives, 3195 passenger and 25,883 freight cars. Were promoted this year 31.9 million people and 16.9 million tons of goods. Until 1918, when the monarchy collapsed, the network of kkStB reached a length of around 19,000 km.
