In Britain, it reached number eight in Germany ranked 15th The song is about keeping a relationship secret between lovers. In the Closet is an idiom that is used in English, if someone on a particular aspect of his life is not honest. The New York Times wrote, only Jackson would use the term for a heterosexual relationship. The song is heard a female voice, which was only titled as "Mystery Girl" and was later revealed to be Princess Stéphanie of Monaco.

Decorated in Sepia music video by Herb Ritts shows Jackson as he dances with Naomi Campbell. It was introduced on 23 April 1992. In South Africa, it could not be shown because of its supposed offensiveness.
