With over 160 hectares is the inch Hofener Rossmoos one of the largest contiguous fens in Aichach- Friedberg. Its genesis owes high groundwater levels and numerous outlets of sources in the valley of inches Hofener moss trench and the Schreier creek. The vegetation of the humid lowlands earlier consisted of dense reeds and Seggenbeständen who were at margins surrounded by alder forests. Dead plant roots and failed to fully decompose on wet or water-covered floor. Large quantities of organic matter enriched in consequence, as peat. Since the beginning of peat formation, less than 10,000 years mighty peat layers were deposited in part to 2.6 m. With the intensive agricultural use and reclamation of the marshy valley, for about 200 years, ended the Torfwachstum. Since then, the marsh has disappeared again by more than one meter. Until the mid-20th century the peat, a precursor to Lignite, whether excavated ( razor ) was dried and burned. Today more and more the importance of Roßmooses for nature and landscape protection is recognized.
