Indeo

Indeo is a video codec that was developed by Intel since 1992 and sold to Ligos in 2000. It was one of the first codec that allowed video playback without hardware acceleration.

The codec was extended period of time often used by webcam software for games and CBT applications. Because of its proprietary license is currently not open source codec available. Official decoders exist for Windows, Mac OS Classic (not X) and some other operating systems. For Windows, there are both Video for Windows versions as well as DirectShow versions of the codecs.

Indeo is preinstalled ( 5:08 to 5:11 ) on all versions of Windows from Windows 98 SE to Windows XP in version 5. In Windows XP SP1, the first time the video codec Indeo was not shipped pre-installed. However, since some games and applications have assured that this codec is installed, Microsoft introduced relatively soon a hotfix available that install this codec again.
