Independent Democratic Serb Party

The Samostalna Demokratska srpska stranka, short SDSS (Cyrillic Самостална демократска српска странка, German Independent Serbian Democratic Party) is a political party in Croatia, which represents the interests of the Serbs in Croatia.

History

The party was founded in Eastern Slavonia, which was then under the administration of the Untaes, or on the former territory of the Republika Srpska Krajina in 1997. Most of the founding members were former members of the Serbian Democratic Party ( SDS shortly ). Initially, the Independent Serbian Democratic Party, limited to the Slavonia region. In other parts of Croatia they performed together with the Serbian People's Party. In the 2003 parliamentary elections the party won three seats in the Croatian Parliament, which were reserved for the Serb ethnic minority, and won the elections in some municipalities of Slavonia and Lika.

Self-definition

The SDSS is a democratic party, pursuing the liberal and social democratic objectives, under the circumstances present but also a Serbian national party.

Policy objectives:

  • The return of war refugees, mainly Serbs, and the reconstruction of the destroyed by the war zones
  • The right to purchase apartments and houses, were seized by the state,
  • The protection of the rights of national minorities, especially Serbs
  • The cultural autonomy of Serbs in Croatia - the Serbian language in schools, use of Serbian national symbols
  • Better equipment of the Army
  • Regionalism and decentralization
  • The integration of Croatia into the European Union and the improvement of trade with Serbia and Montenegro
