The first known association is the Calcutta Cricket Club, which has existed since at least 1792. A first tour of the Indian team to Europe took place in 1886, two years later the first English team toured India.

Before the independence of India

Before independence, India initially were some players of Indian origin for the colonial power England in international cricket. In 1911 there was the first time an Indian national team that toured England, but did not play against the English Cricket Team. As a result, India was officially incorporated in 1926 in the then Imperial Cricket Conference and founded the following year the Indian Cricket Board of Control as a dressing. The first test was held in England in 1932 and lost by 158 runs. Until the outbreak of the Second World War not only victory and two draws could be achieved in seven games against England.

After India's independence

After the independence and partition of India, also first games against the other test nations, including Australia and the West Indies took place. However, the first victory was celebrated in 1952 in Madras against England. The first Testseriensoeg then succeeded in the same year, when the first series against Pakistan was held. During the 1950s and 1960s, the team developed steadily and resulted in a first away series win against New Zealand in 1968.

The Rise of the Limited Overs Cricket

At the beginning of the 1970s, the one-day cricket was introduced, which India initially but brought little success. So they parted with the first two editions of the Cricket World Cup in 1975 and 1979 already out in the first round. Were also more prevalent during the time the team in Test cricket, where they could compete with the big teams England and Australia. At the Cricket World Cup 1983, this changed, when it became India defeat the West Indies in the final and was recorded as the first world champion title for the team. Before a home crowd four years later at the World Cup in 1987 would retire then out in the semifinals.

1990s to the millennium

In the 1990s, the performance of the team in Test cricket were only moderate. He managed an away win in this decade and it could be won only just over half of the home games. Also in the one- day cricket, the success could not be repeated. The latter game was stopped and counted for the opponent, as in the Eden Gardens in Calcutta, there was crowd trouble after poor performances of the Indians. Also at the end of the decade, it was not better than you retired at the newly formed Champions Trophy in 1998 in the semifinals and after acceptable cut off in the group stage in the Super Six round was eliminated last in the World Cup 1999.

Millennium to the present day

In 2000, the first time a Foreign Trainer with John Wright was committed and the benefits were better. A highlight was, for example, the victory after a follow -on to the Eden Gardens of Kolkata against Australia in 2001, which represented only the third ever victory after a follow -on to a test. After the first innings India stood back with 274, but could still win with 171 runs lead.
