Indian Mackerel ( Rastrelliger kanagurta )

The Indian mackerel or bigmouth mackerel ( Rastrelliger kanagurta ) is a primitive representative of the Scombridae, which means the fish has a swim bladder of normal size and a few Flössel ( each 5-7). He lives in tropical and subtropical marine areas of the Indo - West Pacific region. Lately, he has penetrated the Red in the Mediterranean ( Lessepssche migration).

Its diet consists of eggs and young fish, but mainly general of plankton, especially copepods, arrow worms, pteropods, algae etc. Accordingly, he has a close gills trap. He is one of the fish that with sufficient plankton density from single - snapping to the planktonic strain with mouth wide open (ram feeding ) (just like anchovies).

The swarm fish lives mainly surface- and offshore, reach a maximum of 35 cm length, usually only to 25 cm. He is considered tasty, will therefore be caught with nets ( commercial) and fishing. It spawns pelagic. The maximum age is expected to be four years.
