Indian massacre of 1622

The Jamestown Massacre took place on March 22, 1622 held in the area of English settlement Jamestown in Virginia and was the first major massacre of Indians to whites in North America.

Pamunkey Indians under Opechancanough Sachem raided around Jamestown in James City County farms and dwellings. With his warriors he destroyed about seventy English settlements. Of the more than 1,200 colonists 347 were killed.

As the surviving colonists Opechancanough and its leaders asked for a meeting, they fell upon the Indians'. Opechancanough escaped. 22 years later he was captured and killed in prison by a guard. Most settlers were killed during the Indian Rebellion of 1622 along the James River. Until 1630, the English settlements were attacked sporadically.
